Religious Glossary


Architecture

Chapel: A place of worship in another building or within a civil institution such as a larger church, airport, prison, monastery, school, etc.; often primarily for private prayer.

Circumambulatory: Designed especially for ritualistic circumambulation.

Hieron: A consecrated place, especially a temple.

Mantapa/Mandapa: A pillared hall or porch fronting a Hindu temple. It may be attached or detached from the building.

Mausoleum: A large stately tomb or a building housing such a tomb or several tombs.

Monastery: A building for housing monks or others who have taken religious vows.

Pagoda: A religious building in South and Southeast Asia, especially a multi-storey tower erected as a Hindu or Buddhist temple.

Sanctuary: The consecrated (or sacred) area of a church or temple around its tabernacle or altar.

Sanctum: A place set apart, as with a sanctum sanctorum; a sacred or private place; a private retreat or workroom.


Ancient Greece and Rome

Arcadian: An inhabitant of ancient Arcadia; Pertaining to ancient Arcadia.

Arcosolium: A tomb in an arched recess in a wall.

Euthynteria: In classical Greek architecture, the uppermost course of a building's foundations, partly emerging from the groundline.

Pronaos: The inner area of the portico of a Greek or Roman temple.

Phiale: An enclosed or arcaded fountain. An Ancient Greek libation bowl.

Propylaeum: (historical contexts, especially Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome) A vestibule or entrance, (especially) to a temple.

Telamon: A figure of a man (often Atlas) used as a pillar for support.

Xystus: (historical, architecture, in Ancient Greece) A long and open portico within the gymnasium.


Ancient Egyptian

Pylon: A gateway to the inner part of an Ancient Egyptian temple.


Mesopotamian

Ziggurat: A temple tower of the ancient Mesopotamian valley, having the form of a terraced pyramid of successively receding stories.


Christian


Hindu

Kovil: A Hindu temple built in a distinct style of Dravidian architecture.

Mandir: (Hinduism, only in India) A Hindu temple.


Buddhist

Chedi: A Thai Buddhist monument similar to a stupa.

Stupa: A dome-shaped Buddhist monument, used to house relics of the Lord Buddha.

Vihara: A Buddhist monastery.

Gurudwara/Gurdwara: A Sikh place of worship.
